UIF Registrations

What is UIF? The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) serves as a financial safety net for workers facing specific circumstances. It provides short-term relief to those who are unemployed, on parental leave, or unable to work due to illness. Additionally, the dependents of deceased UIF contributors can also access benefits from the fund.

In South Africa, it is mandatory for all employers to register their employees with the UIF and consistently contribute to the fund on their behalf. The establishment of the fund is governed by the Unemployment Insurance Act.

Mandatory Employee Registration with UIF All employers are legally obligated to register their employees with the UIF, a requirement applicable to those employing individuals for over 24 hours per month.

Upon registration, employers are required to make monthly contributions to the fund. This contribution amounts to 2% of the employee’s gross monthly salary, with employers responsible for covering 1% of this total.
